Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Mountain Rescue Service (MRS).

Our team is composed of highly trained volunteers who provide critical technical rescue support to hikers, climbers, and skiers throughout the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The following are some of the minimum requirements for potential applicants:

  • Residence: You must be a full time resident in or near the Mount Washington Valley (MWV).
  • Climbing Ability: Active, year-round climber capable of leading 5.10 traditional rock routes, NEI 4 ice climbs, and grade III rock/alpine routes.
  • Backcountry Competence: Comfortable in adverse mountain conditions and on multi-day winter backcountry trips.
  • Terrain Knowledge: Must have a functional familiarity with the alpine terrain in the Presidential Range, as well as the local cliffs and crags of the region.
  • Medical Training: Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher.
  • Avalanche Education: AAA approved level 1 avalanche safety course and companion rescue course.
  • Equipment: Must own personal gear appropriate for technical rescue in all seasons. This includes, but is not limited to avalanche safety equipment, technical climbing equipment for rock/ice/alpine objectives, mountaineering boots (including double boots), bivy gear, and a sufficient layering system for harsh winter weather.
  • Referring Member: At least one current MRS member must serve as a reference.
